Google is constantly expanding its partnerships, so more and more smart home tech is supported by the assistant. Being a Google product and all, there’s no surprise at all that it integrates seamlessly with most of Google’s services. You can easily cast YouTube Music from your smartphone, or any other Chromecast-supported app like Podcast Addict. You can even use it to control certain smart home devices like the Nest Cam or compatible Honeywell thermostats. The speaker itself packs a 2-inch driver and dual 2-inch radiators. But, as a kitchen speaker at this price, this does the job of playing music and controlling the smart home just fine.
We specifically chose it because Alexa has trouble playing that one , but the Home had no trouble firing it up. The angled top is touch-sensitive and illuminates with multi-colored dots when you summon the device with an “OK, Google” or “Hey, Google,” the phrases that signal it should start listening. You can use the surface to change the volume, start a request, play or pause music, or turn off an alarm or timer. There’s a microphone button in the back, so you can ensure the device isn’t listening. To get started, just set up a Google account or grab your handle and password if you already have one, then click the Personalized Home link atop Google.com. The searchable "Add more to this page" link hooks you up with content arranged by topic, such as Finance or Fun & Games, and a display of popular Gadgets.
Google Home Max
The Total Security package costs $525, but you can add more cameras at additional costs to customize your home security system. You can also connect to a service like ADT for an additional cost and extra security. When sub-bass moments occasionally occur in the mix, the speakers deliver them with full-bodied presence that doesn't compete with the highs for the spotlight. Again, the louder you pump the volume, the thinner the bass gets, but at fairly high listening levels, the bass depth is still impressive. The vocals are delivered with solid clarity and without much added sibilance. Bill Callahan's "Drover," a track with less deep bass in the mix, gives us a better sense of the Home Max's overall sound signature.
And while Google Home excels as a DJ, it’s also a surprisingly intelligent smart home hub. It already hooks into some of the largest platforms now by including Nest, Philips and Samsung’s SmartThings, and given a few months that number will grow even more. It’s also a pain to control playback once you’ve started casting. Instructing the speaker to ‘play’ or ‘pause’ works well, but if you tell it to play another song then it suddenly forgets that it’s casting and will instead play the new song from the Home’s own speaker.

The drums on this track can sound overly thunderous on speakers that boost the bass too much, but through the Home Max, you get lovely bass depth. The drums sound full, rich, and round—neither overly boosted nor weak. Purists won't be thrilled with the bass boosting and sculpting in the highs that goes into making this sound signature, but most listeners will enjoy the full, clear sound. But Google Assistant is terrific as a whole-home system. It can recognize up to six different voices for different Google accounts, synchronize music between rooms, and even broadcast messages to all of the Google Home devices in your home. Along the back panel, there's a mic switch—this turns the mic for Google Assistant and the speakerphone on and off.
You’ll also want to install the software and drivers, whether on a Mac or on a PC. On a Mac, you’ll use the Brother iPrint&Scan, which is relatively easy to navigate and install. After installing it, however, I didn’t really use the software at all. The first thing to notice about the Brother MFC-J6555DW is its design, and while it’s a little basic, it’s not an ugly printer.
Google Home – Smart home
This, again, is a physical limitation of the speaker casing and size. The single driver is unable to move fast enough and accurately reproduce all frequencies without distortion, so you’re left with what some refer as a “muddy” sound. It’s diminutive in size and features a peculiar looking shape, one that can be mistaken for one of those Glade air fresheners you might find throughout a home. The bottom compartment of the Google Home that’s shielding its array of speakers feature a mesh-like fabric, which does a better job we feel in complementing your furniture. And if you want some customization, the base can be swapped out.
But the bad guys are coming with their guns and their bombs and their bombs and their guns. When live-action characters enter the picture, which isn’t often, you’re reminded that you’re watching an expensive cartoon and it’s honestly a little jarring. There’s some uncanny valley stuff here, but mainly the Navi just look super fake compared to the humans, and the humans feel super out-of-place surrounded by Navi.
Cancel a subscription / trial at anytime by blocking the site or app on your Justuseapp Card. Recently, Google started allowing users to turn the speaker into a hands-free phone. It’s handy but can get a little frustrating when your sister changes her name and shows up as two different contacts and Google keeps asking which one you wanted to call. The Home reminds us a little of a nesting doll that’s had its top shorn off at an angle. It’s white and comes with a gray base, but for another $20 you can get orange, purple, or teal fabric, and $40 will get you a metal version in black, white, or copper. They actually have fancier names, but we’re not going to call something mango and expect you to know what we’re talking about.
Google Home finally got the ability to link multiple accounts, and it distinguishes between users’ voices. When it comes to podcasts, you can’t request that the Home play a specific episode, but you can say, “Play My Favorite Murder podcast,” then ask it to play the previous episode. It’s only natural to compare the Home and the Dot, which sits right next to it in our one of our test living rooms. The first thing we noticed is that saying “Hey, Google” feels less personal than asking Alexa for information or assistance. One DT staffer tried to rouse it by calling it “Noodle” and got no answer. You can add Gadgets in fewer steps than with the widgets for Netvibes.
Google Home Routines is easy to use, allowing you to control multiple devices with one word. While this is great for big name devices like lights and thermostats, plus a few smart plugs, beyond that you might not have Google recognise it. So if you've gone budget on the smart home upgrades, it might be worth checking if Google Home Routines supports them.
We found these controls to be exceptionally responsive, but, of course, you can also just talk to the Home Max. You can say, "set volume," from one to ten, or use percentages. I honestly wasn't expecting much since I stayed at a home that had Alexa. It's easy to maneuver and I like that it resumes from where you left off if you accidentally stop it. As for improvements, I'd love more options for news and to be able to read the full description of each news option somehow.
